I was working on numerical simulation of two-phase pipe flow with Dr. Lin Jianzhong at Zhejiang University. Suspension of fibres in both laminar and turbulent pipe flow was studied to understand the orientation distribution of the fibres. Lagrangian simulation was applied to disclose the effect of Reynolds number, flow shear, turbulent kinetic energy and fibre aspect ratio on the fibre orientation distribution.

Later, fascinated by the magic earth system, I transferred to Physical Oceanography. ROMS, a widely-used regional ocean circulation model, is my tool to study the mechanisms and influences of coastal ocean circulations. To improve numerical simulation and predict ocean weather, newly available ROMS Adjoint and Tangent Linear models are being used to assimilate observational data from all kinds of instruments: satellite, CODAR, glider, mooring, shipborne ADCP and CTD, etc. Meanwhile, the models are also being applied for sensitivity analysis, optimal oberservation and water/tracer age and residence time studies.

Projects:

ESPreSSO (Experimental System for Predicting Shelf and Slope Optics). Aiming at forecasting ocean color, observations of SSH, SST, velocity, in-situ TS, etc, in Mid-Atlantic Bight area are being assimilated into ocean physics models using ROMS IS4DVAR to provide a best physics background for an ocean optics model. Ocean color observation will be assimilated into the ocean optics model as well to improve out capability of forecasting ocean color.
